Many believe that TDC is simply about winning trophies, but in reality, it’s a rigorous safety and skills program that enhances driver performance and promotes accident-free driving.
The trucking industry is built on safety, precision, and professionalism.
While compliance programs and training initiatives play a crucial role in ensuring driver safety, one of the most effective yet often overlooked programs is the annual State Truck Driving Championships (TDC).
More than just a competition, the TDC is a platform for celebrating driver excellence, improving fleet safety, boosting driver retention, and strengthening company culture.

A Proven Safety Program
The TDC is one of the most effective safety programs a fleet can encourage its drivers to participate in. As 16-time National Truck Driving Champion Bob Dolan explained on the Caution: Wide Right podcast, a key requirement for competition eligibility is maintaining a clean driving record:
“Let’s face it, if a driver goes for one year without an accident to qualify for TDC competition, that in itself has just paid for itself.”
This requirement alone reinforces a culture of safe driving within fleets. Drivers who set their sights on competing will take extra care in their day-to-day operations, reducing accidents, violations, and claims.
Additionally, TDC competitions test drivers on essential safety knowledge, pre-trip inspections, and vehicle handling skills—elements that directly translate to real-world safety benefits on the road.
Here are some common misconceptions fleets have about TDC:
- Only the Best Drivers Can Participate – While the competition does require a clean driving record, any driver willing to put in the effort and preparation can compete and benefit from the experience.
- It Doesn’t Help Fleets – Some assume that TDC is only beneficial to individual drivers, but fleets actually gain safer drivers, increased retention, and improved company culture.
- It’s Not Worth the Time or Investment – Some companies hesitate to support participation, thinking it’s a distraction. However, investing in TDC participation pays off through lower accident rates, stronger team morale, and industry recognition.
- It’s Only About Driving Skills – The competition involves more than just maneuvering a truck—it includes a written test, a pre-trip inspection challenge, and a strong emphasis on safety knowledge.
Let’s take a closer look at why you should encourage drivers to participate in the annual Truck Driving Championships.
Boosting Driver Retention
Retention is a major challenge in the trucking industry, with many fleets struggling to keep their best drivers long-term. Providing opportunities for professional development and recognition, such as participation in the TDC, can significantly improve driver satisfaction.
Having the support of their company at these events shows drivers they are valued and appreciated. Bob Dolan emphasized how important fleet backing is:
“The best thing is to have the company support…having folks there with you, having the practice area in the yard…that support goes a long way.”
A driver who feels supported and encouraged by their company is more likely to stay with the fleet rather than seek employment elsewhere. Investing in driver participation at TDCs signals that the company values long-term driver growth and excellence.
Improving Company Culture
Beyond safety and retention, the TDC fosters a strong company culture by bringing drivers, managers, and safety teams together in pursuit of a shared goal. Fleets that actively participate in the event create a sense of camaraderie and pride among their drivers.
Providing access to practice areas, equipment, and mentorship further reinforces a team-oriented culture. Dolan shared his experience working with supportive managers:
“I’ve had a number of good managers and supervisors over the years that have really supported us. For example, we might say, ‘Hey, we need some orange cones.’ Yeah, no problem. They’ll order a few cones up for you, make some barricades, barrels, whatever you need.”
These seemingly small gestures create an environment where drivers feel respected, heard, and motivated to perform at their best. The competition itself builds friendships and peer mentorships, further strengthening the company’s internal relationships.
