Who does it apply to?
All commercial motor carriers that operate “qualified” motor vehicles must register in the IRP program to pay their registration fees. Many carriers also need to manage their vehicle titles and IFTA Licensing.
What are your licensing and permitting needs?*
IRP and IFTA Licensing are required for:
- Required for two-axle power units with a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds
- Three-axle power units regardless of weight, and/or
- Power units are used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight
*Exceptions exist for recreational vehicles such as motor homes, pickup trucks with attached campers, and buses when used exclusively for personal pleasure by an individual. Some states have their own exemptions that often apply to farm vehicles or government vehicles.
IRP Licensing
The International Registration Plan, known as IRP, is a registration reciprocity agreement among states, of the United States and provinces of Canada, providing for payment of license fees on the basis of total distance operated in all jurisdictions.
IFTA Licensing
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (or IFTA) is an agreement between the lower 48 states of the United States and the Canadian provinces, to simplify the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers that operate in more than one jurisdiction. Alaska, Hawaii, and the Canadian territories do not participate.
